Driving or biking to the head of the adjoining Gascon valley (NM 105) or Maestas Canyon (NM 276) are discovery excursions to see wild flowers, streams, mountain vistas, village homes and chapels, open meadows, grazing livestock and fruit bearing trees and shrubs.
There are also a number of nearby hiking trails, easy to challenging: Sapello Canyon, Lost Lake, Maestas Canyon, the “burn area ridge,” Lone Pine Mesa, Gascon Peak, plus old mining and logging roads and trails. Maps are available at the Lodge desk. A good way to test your legs is walking the upper roads in Pendaries East and West where you will often see wildlife and have excellent valley views.
No matter where you might be in the valley, you won’t forget seeing a sunrise, a field of flowers, a rainbow, a striking sunset, or a dazzling star-scape from the Pendaries perspective.
